6 Tips To Prepare For Your First Snorkeling Adventure

Posted on

Thinking about going snorkeling for the first time? This is a great way to get a close-up look at sea life, and unlike scuba diving, it doesn't require a lot of training. Nearly anyone can snorkel. Use these tips to prepare for your first snorkeling adventure.

1. Make sure the mask fits well.

If your mask doesn't fit well, you won't feel comfortable, and you won't get the premier sealife views you deserve to see. Before going snorkeling, make sure that your mask fits well. If you're renting a mask, take your time. Try on several masks to ensure you get the right fit and ask for help if you're unsure.

2. Practice with the gear.

There is a small learning curve with snorkeling gear. To ensure you make the most of your time in the water, you may want to practice before your expedition.

In particular, practice swimming with swim fins. They may take a little getting used to, but they'll help you conserve energy while swimming. They can be especially helpful if you have to swim against a current.

3. Get ready to breathe through your mouth.

When you snorkel, you have to breathe through your mouth. If possible, try to practice with the snorkel — that's the name of the breathing tube and the activity. But even if you can't get ahold of a snorkel ahead of time, make sure you practice breathing through your mouth.

You won't be able to breathe through your nose underwater with the snorkel gear. The good thing about snorkeling is that you can surface at any time. So, you don't need to be that proficient at using the snorkel.

However, the better you are, the longer you can stay underwater. This allows you to make the most of the experience.

4. Bring biodegradable sunscreen.

The sun's rays can hit you even when you're underwater. To protect your skin, you need sunblock. However, conventional sunblocks can be hard on sea life. To protect the sea, you should look for biodegradable sunblock.

5. Study local sea life.

Ocean life is stunning whether you know about it or not. However, if you spend a little time studying the sea life in your destination, you'll likely feel even more excited when you spot underwater creatures. For instance, if you're going snorkeling on the Na Pali Coast, you should study the sea life in that area.

6. Find a reputable tour guide.

Finally, make sure the people who take you out on the water are reputable. You want a guide who can provide you with the right equipment and help you learn how to use it. You also want someone who knows about the local sea life and can show you the best underwater spots.
